Time: 2 hrs. Trailhead: Butler Wash Panel. Fee: none. Attractions: Numerous petroglyphs. The Kachina Panel is located west of Bluff, Utah near where Butler Wash meets up with the San Juan River. The panel has multiple large images that have been identified to represent various kachina so it is also sometimes referred to as the Kachina Panel.

The Procession Panel is a well-known Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi) petroglyph located just below the summit of Comb Ridge. Access is from San Juan County road #230 which runs the length of Butler Wash connecting UT 163 in the south to UT 95 in the north. The trailhead is about 7 miles north of UT 163 or 14 miles south of UT 95.

Trailhead: Procession Panel. Fee: $5/person/day. Attractions: Petroglyphs. The Procession Panel trail is located in the Butler Wash area near Bluff, Utah. Butler Wash parallels the eastern flanks of Comb Ridge. The area has a high concentration of cliff dwellings, rock art and other relics of the people that have inhabited the area off and on.


This spectacular display of 1000 yearold petroglyphs is called the

Wolfman Panel Trail. Enjoy this 0.8-mile out-and-back trail near Bluff, Utah. Generally considered a moderately challenging route. This trail is great for hiking, and it's unlikely you'll encounter many other people while exploring. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime.

This trail is great for birding, hiking, and walking, and it's unlikely you'll encounter many other people while exploring.

This is a popular trail for hiking and walking, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. The best times to visit this trail are March through April. Preview trail.

Without a doubt, my favorite rock art site along the Lower Butler Wash Road is the amazing Procession Panel, a 15-ft long petroglyph panel though to represent a ceremonial gathering or migration story. Just beyond the second crossing you will see a spur trail on the right leading to a petroglyph panel. More petroglyphs are located along the eastern wall at 1.1 and along the western wall at 1.2 miles. Reach the confluence of Lower Butler Wash and the San Juan River at 1.4 miles (2.6 miles from the 2WD parking area).

A very large petroglyph panel located at the junction of Butler Wash and the San Juan River in San Juan County, Utah. Also, the 0.7 mile distance assumes that you've driven nearly to the site from lower Comb Wash. If you don't have a high-clearance vehicle this should not be attempted and it will add another 4 miles (total) to your hike.


Nonstop petroglyphs, Butler wash petroglyph panel, 500+ feet in length

Fossil Print- Lower Butler Wash - River Panel. This has to be one of the premier hikes in the Bluff and Mexican Hat area. The hike descends an old wagon road, and visits several ruins en route to the river. At the river, a large petroglyph panel provides the cherry on top of a great hike. This panel, the River Panel, is very large, and well.

Petroglyph Sites. The Procession Panel (reached by a 1.4-mile cross-country hike) and the nearby Wolfman Panel in Lower Butler Wash are the best-known petroglyph sites at Comb Ridge, but you'll have to work a little to see them. Stop by the BLM offices in Blanding or Monticello for directions and information on how to appropriately visit.

The Lower Butler Wash Road, which parallels the base of the ridge to the east, offers access to the ridge and its drainages which are renowned for the numerous prehistoric sites, including ruins and rock art. No matter how many time I visit the ridge I always allocate time to hike to Procession Panel, the most amazing petroglyph panel in the area.

Once in the wash the trail heads down canyon, passing a few small ruins and other minor rock art panels on its way to the river. The petroglyph panel, just to the east of the confluence of the Butler Wash and the San Juan River, includes hundreds of animal, plant, human and geometric images.
